Desktop Operating Systems
For this, I am not going to be talking about any mobile phone OS like android or embedded systems like libreCMC.
Distro Hopping
When I entered the linux world at first, I did this and it is one of the most stupid things to do.
Look at this linux distro tree (png). There are so many distros and many are created and abandoned. Many do not hold any special purpose. They are a copy of a big distro like debian but with some changes with the desktop. If you want the desktop to look a certain way, go rice it yourself. Don’t install a different distro just for that.
Unique
There are some specialised systems like clonezilla for copying a disk or tails for an anonymous computer session wherever you are but a majority are not this special.
For systemd haters, you can go with something like artix if you still want bleeding edge and the power of the AUR.
Systems I Have Used
I have previously used a few.
- Debian
- Qubes (and hence other systems like debian, fedora, whonix).
- Gentoo
- OpenBSD
- Arch
- Manjaro
- Windows
- MacOS
I use several of these currently but some much less often than others. I don’t really use some systems like gentoo (for compile time) and arch or manjaro (stability) any longer. I’m not including other systems that I have tested out a little but not really experienced much or a few specialised systems I have used before.
So Which System Is The Best?
It entirely depends on what you need it for. Different systems have their own place. You have to figure out what you want. It took me some time to really take that in when I was starting out.
