mpv
You usually need a media player on a system and Mpv is my favourite. Other media players like VLC are still good but I prefer mpv.
No Telemetry
Unlike some other media players, mpv does not collect any information about its users. No opt-in or opt-out for it. It’s a pointless waste of bandwidth and doesn’t feel required anyways.
Simple And Powerful
Mpv has a very simple UI that is easy to navigate. As there aren’t many buttons on the player, a lot of the controls are in keyboard shortcuts which can be annoying to learn but the few very important ones are easy to learn. Read the manual to learn the controls. In normal use, it isn’t very taxing on hardware which is great especially for multi-taskers.
As you can also see from the manual, mpv is very powerful. The defaults are sane but you can configure it in any way you want. Default size of window, location on your display, start in fullscreen for certain files, skip a specified amount when button is pressed, size and location of cache, where to keep looping the video from and so on. It is also great to play a video from the web (streaming) rather than only local to your machine and with custom scripts, the same goes for torrents too and other features like preview on seek. Some more on this page and more can be found on the internet. This is hands down one of the best programs I’ve used. Try it for yourself.
